My name is Jack Parry and I am a film enthusiast. This is my three part blog about who made Leonardo DiCaprio - PART 2.
The next film comes 2 years after the previous collaboration (featured in Part 1). The Departed; this film is in the crime genre.
In Scorsese's The Departed, Leo he played the role of Billy Costigan, a state trooper working undercover in an Irish Mob in Boston. Matt Damon played part of the Irish Mob infiltrating the police department. The film was an adaptation of the Hong Kong cult classic, Infernal Affairs. The entire cast watched the original all thoroughly enjoying it; appreciating the acting class and different culture.
The film was a massive step forward in DiCaprio’s career. The production includes 6 A-list Hollywood actors - Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga, Anthony Anderson, and Brad Pitt. This was a leap of faith for Scorsese - putting him with the best actors in the world. This came as a result of the strong relationship and previous experience Scorsese had with Leo.
In an interview DiCaprio stated that his preparation for the role was to go to Boston and meet people that were around in the 1980’s when the Irish Mob was at its peak. It helped him to dive into their characteristics and emotions and was slightly disappointed that most of the film was shot in New York as he grew fond of the Boston area.
The 79th Academy Awards in 2007 saw The Departed sweep the floor winning a total of four Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director for Martin Scorsese. DiCaprio didn’t get much recognition for The Departed, however was nominated for best actor for his role in Blood Diamond. Unfortunately he was beaten to it by Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland.
The Aviator added what many critics thought DiCaprio needed to show and that was maturity, this new role he was placed in was a surprise to many as it wasn’t really him. After The Departed many critics were calling DiCaprio a new man with a new range. After this everyone in the industry had respect for DiCaprio and were now eager to see if he could replicate this talent in his next role. At this point in his career a very high standard had been set.
